Pulled this 1998P 5c out due to an apparent raised date that looks to have been double-stamped. The numbers and MM are all raised (and are the only parts of the coin that are) and bolded compared to a typical 1998 shown to the right for comparison.

I know that MD often materializes as a shelf on the letters, which can be seen looking at the bottom-left of the '1'. would this also cause the letters to be twice as high and bold?

The date has just taken a hit, not an error coin. PSD.

"Taking a hit" would explain why there's a piece missing but why is the date bolded and twice as thick (the img doesn't do it justice, but compared to multiple regular examples of same year, it is definitely about twice as thick in the date).

I'm a novice here. Trying to understand the mechanics behind what would cause such raised lettering?

Thanks

@John1,

My photo taking setup is https://amzn.to/30iZbFD this USB digital microscope that apparently doesn't allow me to save the images to my computer. It does have a nice screen though so I ended up just taking a picture of the microscope screen with my phone.

I just overlaid coin in question on top of a benchmark 1998P for reference.

The apparent difference in relief may be due to such mundane factors as the die state or a slight variance in the set up of the machinery. I don't imagine it'll command a premium.

Hits not only show the damage but the metal it hits also moves and often looks strange if the hit is on a date or a mint mark.
