It was listed as "1883 NO CENTS Liberty nickel XF/AU" so being full AU was a nice surprise ;)
Rest in Peace

I'll give it a PCGS 99 code until you give it a soak in acetone.

After that AU seems correct.

I agree with bump. More likely that it's PVC. Especially from your description.

It's always good to examine your options when you decide to purchase a particular coin.

The 1883 no cents is the single most common 19th century coins, up to and including MS-65.

They are available in PCGS or NGC holders for no upcharge from raw.

I'm not knocking your purchase. But a bit of research can get you your very best example of any coin for a good price.

I'm happy with this coin. It's exactly what I wanted for the price I wanted to pay so I'm happy (it's even a higher grade than I thought, I was looking at XF, but happy when it came in AU). Like I posted several other times I have no interest in slabbed coins. Doesn't mean I won't buy one, but I won't pay a cent more for a slab over a raw. I also collect to enjoy my collection. This isn't about getting the best, I have no interest in the best what I have interest in is getting the best coin for the price I am willing to pay. I love the "scrap" coins at LCS. I get stuff I want at great prices.

Those are pretty close to the same feelings I have.
