westcoin Pillar of the Community United States 9792 Posts	Posted 09/20/2019 4:58 pm Possibly, the plain 5 RPDs are mostly very subtle, can you tell if the D in united has a partial top serif? Might be a die crack between 6-5 which would make it KF-P10-RPD, this coin is a good example for a verdigris removal with some acetone and Verdi-Care. A bit of light picking during the soak with a rose thorn may reveal some doubling, couldn't hurt with a coin of this grade level IMO, but others will say to leave it be, I'd rather be able to see the doubling so I'd play with it, but that's just me. Kevin Flynn lists 12 different plain 5 RPDs in his book, there are possibly more not found, all very minor I'm sure, and wouldn't really bring a premium in any grade. I'm working on my 1865 dates now, but still in the Fancy 5 first, haven't gotten to doing a close examination of the plain 5's yet. I let Frank Leone do the 1864LM die pairings, so far I believe we are over 130 pairings now. With almost as many 1865 coins produced the numbers could be similar, at least the mintages drop off substantially every year after 1865, so they should be easier, but many, many Two Cent coins were also collected and melted over the years following their release, the numbers on that are not known to my knowledge. Kevin Flynn did some very good research at the National Archives and published them in his first book "Getting your Two Cents worth" in 1993.
