Hello,
I have this G4ish 1863 cent with what looks to be an error, but I do not know much about error coins. I would like to know if it is an error, and if so, a rough value (I do not want to sell it). As far as I can tell without fancy tools, the defect is possibly slightly deeper than anything else, but not by much. I could do a wax or something cast of it if that matters?

Thank you!

@jonnin, first welcome to CCF. Second, that could be damage too. Is there are corresponding flat spot on the front of the coin?

Looks like it was partially drilled.

Thanks. Its way too shallow to have been drilled by any technique I know to make that big a raised spot around it? Impact by something hitting HARD, possibly, but drilled? There isn't anything I can tell on the front... the spot would be about where his ear is and there may be the most microscopic of marks there, but nothing significant. I will get a front shot in a few min and post that. I can't see anything that would indicate the Ns were once intact in the ring, either. Why would anyone drill a couple of nanometers and stop?

The trouble with the front is that its worn + if there were a spot, it would fall in that natural spot between ear and hair and all, making it hard to verify. what do you guys think?

This is the highest resolution I can do, one last take on the back. I can just barely see that odd crack/line thing pointing at the E. I missed that with my handheld tools, but the high resolution scan picked it up. Its also easier to see that its (no?) deeper than the flattest parts of the coin elsewhere. Its also flat inside the hole: most drills would be rounded toward the center(?). Anyway, its probably just weird damage, that I agree with.

It is definitely just damaged. Drilled or a punch, but damaged either way. Nothing in the minting process could result in that. Welcome to the forum though!

Right, not drilled. Punched a long time ago and now just worn down?

Thanks everyone!

I agree; whatever happened to it was long enough ago that the damage is worn as smooth as the rest.
