I had a friend visit the Winnipeg mint a few weeks ago and gave me the scoop on the next version of the Poppy "Spy" quarter. I've just had it confirmed with another source, with some more info, and from what I understand, this is the reason for the change of release date on the figure skating Olympic quarter. It will bear the inscriptions "1918 ARMISTICE 2008" and "REMEMBER - SOUVENIR" in order to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the 1918 Armistice. The release date should be set for Tuesday, November 11th, 2008. Contact your friendly neighbourhood Canadian to reserve yours now!

G'day, did the original "spy" or poppy quarter get into circulation ? Does it still circulate now ? I ask because, in Oz, the popular commemoratives are "put away" very quickly by the public. Example: Bradman 20-cent of 2001. So, even if the number issued is large, they are only rarely encountered in circulation. And then, in succeeding years, they dribble back into the public domain, usually in near-Unc condition: a reward for the vigilant noodler. I'm wondering if that was the Canadian experience ?
Secondly, assuming a "No" to either of the above, what is the going rate in Canada for one in a better grade ?

The original poppy quarter did circulate a bit, but the colour wore off very quickly, so any found in circulation now (and they are found from time to time), are usually pretty worn. The Pink ribbon was released in 2006, and there are still a number of them floating about, and they hold their colour a lot better. It does seem that they were set aside by the casual collectors.
I can find an original poppy quarter every 20 rolls or so, they're not all that common, but then again, I stopped looking for them since the colours are all worn off anyway. If you can find one BU, they go for around 3x face, give or take, from dealers, rolls of 40 are around $20-25.
On a side note, I used to get so many of the Bradman quarters back in 2001, that I stopped saving them. Of course, I worked at a Telstra shop, so I saw LOTS of change.

As usual, the Canadian Mint's site has no info, and emailing them never works. You'd think they would want to create a little more hype around upcoming launches. My local bank tellers rely on me to tell them when they are getting the new stuff! LOL

So we're getting the Poppy II end Oct, Figure Skating Nov 18, and the Bobsleigh I assume will follow in December (original date was October).

I visited the RCM in Winnipeg a few days ago. They told me the new poppies will ship in 2 weeks for release Oct 30. They could not show me one but I bet they have them in their drawer ready to sell as they have all been pressed and boxed for shipping. ALL the remaining 2010 Olympic quarters have been pushed back about a month but they could not give me a definite schedule. I believe RBC branches have a partial new schedule, e.g. Figure Skaters Nov 18. I also asked about release dates for 2009 circ coins, got the standard answer.
