1989 P Nickel Copper Color - Coin Community Forum

Ea333525 New Member United States 5 Posts	Posted 09/21/2019 10:26 pm I am new to coin collecting. I found a 1989 P nickel that has a distinct copper color. I searched online and found that most think it's just discoloration. The scratches in the coin seem to be a shiny copper color. Does anyone have an opinion on what would cause this or if it is a particular minted coin? I will try to post pictures. Thanks! Report this Post to the Staff

NumisRob Bedrock of the Community United Kingdom 17969 Posts	Posted 09/22/2019 04:36 am The metal composition of the US nickel is very similar to the UK 6d, 1/-, 2/- and 2/6d coins issued from 1947 to 1967 and the decimal 50p (plus the 5p and 10p up to 2010). I've often found long-buried cupro-nickel coins with my metal detector, and despite using various methods to clean them (so I can spend them), it can be very difficult to get rid of the pinkish colour. This looks as though it could be a detector find that's been put back into circulation.
