Not looking for the variety, although that would be great, but there's not much to work with. For starters it looks like a draped bust left small letters, but I'm just not positive. Any confirmation or denial would be appreciated. Thanks Ed

Well it is a 1787 draped bust left, but I am not familiar with the "small letters" designation. I have collected Connecticuts by die variety and I am sure there is enough of yours left to at least narrow it down but it will take some time. Concentrate on the reverse and the positioning of the letters, it is a bit rough but may be one of the ETLIR varieties.

Thanks. I wasn't sure of the date. How did you determine that it's a 1787? In the below link, they talk about the large and small letters, which would narrow down the dies a bit. Yeah, I thought it was possibly an ETLIR also, but couldn't get any of the reverses to match. Looked like a possible Z reverse because Z.16 had the raised L, but I checked them all, and they don't quite match. That's as far as I've gotten. I thought the raised up L in ET(L)IB would be an easy match, but nothing so far. Looks like a project coin to match the variety. I do this once in a while.....enjoy the challenge, and might keep me busy, and from spending more money Picked it up for $24.

Think I found it. Looks like an a.1 reverse. The only two obverses I found with it, are a 26 or 27, and the 27 looks good, for a 27-a.1. Do you know if there are any other obverses paired with the reverse? What book do you use to attribute these? Thanks, Ed

It was paired with obverses 8, 26 and 27. I have used several different sources to ID them, I have sort of been away from Connecticuts for a while. Whitman's Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American coins is a decent book that won't break the bank.
