Hi All: I havea couple of questions:

1> Has anyone installed the CHKD (or something like), the firmware hack to allow RAW and other capabilites that are in the code but not activated in the S3IS? Would you recommend using it?

2> I beleive that there is a host of data associated with every photo taken. What is that file name and what info does it contain? Does anyone know if that is in a file that can be accessed and imported into another database?

Thanks,

G.E.

Hello, I cannot answer your questions directly but I can point you to another thread with some links that should be helpful.

G.E. .... I have it on my S5 and love it. Recommend it highly.

If you are referring to the EXIF information, you can look at any of your JPEGs in Windows Explorer (for example), do a right click on the photo and go to properties. It will display the available EXIF information on your S3 shots.

A note on the RAW files, they are a little tricky getting converted (try DNG4PS-2.exe and RawTherapee - both free programs if I recall correctly). Think you will find CHDK very interesting and useful is many phases of photography.

If I might add on RAW files, Photoshop has a very capable plugin for RAW that gives you a host of color temperature, contrast, exposure, saturation and other adjustments that allow you to fine-tune a photo before importing. From what I've read, there are advantages since you're working with the largest amount of photo data in RAW mode. Once I started using RAW, I never considered going back to camera-generated jpeg files, which can lose critical highlight and shadow data.
