Poll Question

there is a great belief among collectors that Value of a particular coin or set is secondary as a reason for collecting coins, and that Historical and asthetic value is why coins are collected.

A poll could be the best option for this subject.A forum is a great what to share this information.
I think of collecting more as an investment in your future.
With today's markets and, inflation rates gold and, silver coins it a great way to hedge your future. Like a 401 k plan investing in the right type of coins or, stocks would be the key to future security
For you and, your family alike. Enjoy viewing your coins wile you have them.
I think kids and, new collector alike also feel this way. If you are spending or, investing money for a coin to enjoy today. Someday you may wish to sell it for a profit. I feel That High grade coins is the main reason slabes and, grading companys entered the market in the first place.
Long term investing is the key. Wile coins may be used in conjunction to stocks and bonds. Wile Not limiting your financial options and, goals as a new collector or investor. Its a brand new world enjoy.

Feel free to add coments to this poll..
thanks for your responses to this thread.

I voted other, most of the coin I buy becuase I love to collect coins and plan on giving them to my kids if they want them or sell them if they do not, But I buy most of my silver dollar becuase I like them but know if I get in a pinch I can sell them faster for money if I need it over a coin. so really both for investment and just love of coins

I buy and collect for many reasons! Some coins will remain with me until my death and others are purchased as investment opportunities. The coins that are designated as "my collection" aren't going anywhere and those bought as extra's or as mere speculation will go when the market deems its time to sell. Those coins help put money into my budget for coins needed for "MY Collection". One helps the other!

When I started collecting coins it wasnt intended as an investment, it just turned out that way. Over the years some of them skyrocketed in prices such as the Carson City and Dahlonega mintage coins.
It makes me cringe when I think about some of the coins that I passed on years ago - seeing the prices now.

Other. Mostly "Do you buy coins because you appretiate the coin and its history, plan to give them to your kids" except that I don't have any kids.

My coins will go to our kids.

I suppose if really tough financial times came along, it would be good to have coins which could be used to pay bills. However, the plan is to pass them on to the next generation.

I buy coins to complete my sets I also buy coins in the hopes of selling them for more than I paid for them at a later date. Then using the money to complete my sets.
I have no kids and my wife is not interested in my collection so it will probably mostly be turned into the bank for folding stuff and the rest sold to a dealer for a minimal price. I don't worry about this as I will not be around to care. The coins will find their way back to collectors in time I am shure. I will have enjoyed them while they were with me.

I usually buy only what I like and only things that I would not be troubled by if they didn't go up in value one cent. And I usually buy what is not interesting to others or at least not interesting to the masses. In this way I get the best prices and few if any grading headaches. I just purchased two military tokens that had no mention of grade, just a scan, and no mention that one of them has a 90 degree rotation. Can you imagine if that was State Quarter?

IMO, collecting in this way is not only pleasurable but is investing, indirectly and more importantly the way that successful investors of the past did it. By demanding supply (buying what no one wants) and supplying demand (selling what everyone is clamoring for.)
Isn't that really all that a speculator does?

I will sometimes buy something as a pure speculation. But I look at it more as wasting money on lotto tickets or speculating in rail roads in the 1800's--building rail lines from no where going to no where. I did this with the Buffalo nickels, socking away two roll sets. My assumption being that some minor error would be found on them, it would be hyped, people would bust open their mint rolls and in a 1000 years....

I inherited 99% of my collection, dating back to my Great, Great, Great Grand father. I would do my family and I a huge injustice by selling any of them. They are all going to my kids if and when I have them.

I just like to collect them, because of their history and beauty. I never thought of an investment, my coins are of limited value, they are basically from exchange, markets, or when we travel abroad

I had to vote "other" since there are multifaceted reasons I collect coins and the poll didn't permit multiple answers. While investment is always in my mind for current purchases, I also consider history, aesthetics (ASEs are gorgeous), and intrigue of specific coins. Further, many of my coins are souvenirs of places I've been, things I've done, people I've met, and wars I've fought. Thus, each of my coins may have been secured for a reason completely separate from the coin next to it.
