I went to "Ahia" last week with the wife on vacation. Her sister's best friend's husband(ain't that a mouthful?) has been selling at shows the last several years, & opened a shop sometime last year. Of course I had to go see what he had available. He was a really nice guy, & pulled lots of coins out of more than one safe to show me. Most of it was slabbed, higher end coins that I couldn't even begin to afford, but it was pretty cool to look at.

Anyway, he had a guy come in the shop a couple weeks back with an old collection that had been glued in an album at some point. All the coins still had a thick yellow glue residue on them. This coin was one of that group. I could see the graffiti on the reverse under the glue, & it was obvious the 25 on the reverse was either weakly struck or from a Grease Filled Die. Anyway, he made me an offer I couldn't refuse & here's what it looks like after an acetone bath.

I have to admit I don't know much about these & I'm looking for grade opinions.

It looks just a bit more worn than my 1834 that just got back from PCGS with a VF-30 grade, so I'll call this VF-20, damaged. You did a good job getting the glue off, but you can't do much about the graffiti. It does look like the 25C. was weakly struck, but it could also be ancient damage that has been worn smooth over time.

It's a decent-looking coin, in spite of the problems.

In hand the graffiti is not as obvious looking as the picture makes it appear. I bought this coin for several reasons. I took up a LOT of time at the guys shop, & know I won't be going back for at least a couple of years so I felt like I should buy something. The coin was offered to me for about what a G4 would retail for, & I had the empty hole in my 7070 that it would fill. I had expected to buy a coin for my 7070 with about this level of detail, I just thought I would pay a lot more for it.

I can see myself eventually looking for a coin without graffiti to replace this one, but unless I run across a screaming deal that won't happen until I have completed the 7070. At that point I am confident I can sell this one for at least what I paid.
