The coin appears to be in mint state but as you can see, the lower image is appalling - any ideas how to make the image clearer ? I can read OLU, then possibly N or V. There seems to be an L in the field.

Poland. Solidus of Sigismund III 1618. Give me a minute and I'll figure out more.

1618 Solidus (schilling) Lithuania under Sigismund III.

Here is a link to the WCN archive for this type and date. Even in very high grade these are not super valuable, but nice collectible coins. Cena is price in PLN, with recent exchange rate about 3.5 to the $US.

Yes these seem to often times be struck off-flan to some extent.

Thanks to both of you.

I hadn't realised there were so many varieties.

I think the obverse has the arms of Riga but the letters after SOLIDUS certainly are not either CIV or RIG. I'm torn between thinking they are OL or SIG and that seems impossible.

The type with the date 1 8 on either side of the monogram obverse is the Lithuanian shilling. So the reverse legend is SOLIDVS M D LIT, though most of LIT is off flan (solidus of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania).
