Picked up a little "error" lot of lincolns this past week. It is kind of funny how some of these coins are labeled, and the prices marked. Most of them are machine doubled coins, or small die cracks. Some are a little better, so I take the good with the bad This one I thought was pretty cool, I have some coins with strike throughs , but none this severe. Not sure what it was struck through, but I am leaning towards a cloth or fabric of some kind.

It might not be too visible in the pics , but the obverse surfaces are a bit rough, very much like a uniformly bubbled zinc coated cent. It could just be the zinc bubbles, but it is a bit too uniform for that IMO. The undulation in the surfaces also makes me think of something other than a grease strike through. Anybody have any ideas ?

The reverse is undamaged, as seen in the pic.

It almost looks like a capped die.

It was struck through a late-stage die cap.

Thanks Mike, I appreciate the input. You too Wrongalot. Not being real familiar with capped die strikes, the thought never crossed my mind. Sounds better than Struck Through Grease anyway !

Just in case you might be wondering and cannot read the date (no mention made here), the reverse style of your coin dictates a date of 1989-1992...unless, of course, it's one of the mismatched reverse coins of 1998, 1999, or 2000.

There may be some small chance you might be able to work out what the date (or part of the date) is on your coin.

You know, I do have the date on the 2x2 it's in...but I don't know why I didn't mention it here ! It is a 1990 dated coin,no sign of a mint mark, you can just barely make out the date under the right light.

And wow ...CC - You are GOOD !
