The SMS coins (which are probably less than 100) all have EDS dies on the obverses. (The cent and Dimes had a EDS reverse also) A lot of the other reverses were created with worn master dies with a weaker set of devices. So they don't look as fresh as the obverses.

While the die is EDS, the design appears to not be as fresh and the obverses.

So how can you tell the differences with that years Proof, Accented, SMS and normal coins (BS) that year? Check below:

Note the extreme die wear and die flow lines. Not a SMS. The dies that struck these test pieces were probably less than 100 strikes. So these dies would still be in the VEDS range. Probably not found in circulation as these were not sold at the mint. Just a few sets were distributed probably to mint employees. (I'm guessing)

I agree with Coop.
And if I recall correctly all the 1964 SMS were found in the estate of a mint director upon their passing and bought by one coin dealer who realized the significance of the find. They methodically sold them to maximize the value.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.
