I have the following 1909 VDB penny, been told there are markers to identify if this is a matte proof... scratches near or under the nose and some die marker near the back of the jacket... I'm new to this and I see scratches under the nose but not sure on the jacket... any opinions?

The rims look rounded, so I don't think it's the matte proof. The matte proof has very sharp, high rims. The surfaces may look like matte finish, but it's more than likely just circulation and wear on your coin.

You're right on the scratches in front of the nose. Also look for a long die scratch between Lincoln's shoulder and the word LIBERTY and a crescent die chip above the right side wheat ear just under the M of UNUM. Remember all of these will stand above the fields. You should be able to find the die markers by doing a web search for the images.

Very hard to tell on a coin in that condition. Keep looking!

The Matte Proofs were double struck making the design a lot stronger:
1909-S VDB business strike:
1909-VDB-Penny!--Is-It-A-Matte-Proof?-Or-Just-A-$5-Penny?
1909-VDB-Penny!--Is-It-A-Matte-Proof?-Or-Just-A-$5-Penny?
1909 Matte Proof 1909 OBV VDB.
1909-S VDB Business strike coin:
1909-VDB-Penny!--Is-It-A-Matte-Proof?-Or-Just-A-$5-Penny?
1909-VDB-Penny!--Is-It-A-Matte-Proof?-Or-Just-A-$5-Penny?
1909 Matte Proof 1909 REV VDB.

The strike is really strong on the matte proofs.
