Hi Vic. It is a forum term that means collecting non-U.S. coins. If you collect and support buying foreign coins you are on your way to becoming a "darksider" Mike

Darkside refers to collectors who actively collect coins from other nations. Actually there are a number of terms that have developed right here that are currently in use world wide NOW! If you collect only U.S. as most collectors do for years and years then you are missing the other side, which we refer to as the Darkside. In a sense that is so true as they were always out of sight and unseen until the world of the internet introduced so many to the beauty, quality, history and culture that so many nations have to offer. There something for everyone, regardless of personal taste and if you look many coins world wide are actually out performing modern U.S. coins! Also take a look at mintages world wide and you will find it is actually pure luck that you can even own a copy of some issues! And I am just talking about modern coins! When you go back into the classics of the world you will find a great number of extremely old beautiful coins that are still very very affordable. Some of the terms you will read here have developed over a period of time and some even started as jokes that caught on. We Darkside collectors are very proud of our hobby and the potential it holds for us, both now, and in the future! When you open your eyes to what is really out there it can be overwhelming but well worth looking at!

Ron Guth, the prez of PCGS had a very favorable article on Darkside coins in 1/30 issue of CW pg 46. Hey Mike, do you have any burrow owls in your back yard?

Along the same spirit of your excellent definition Terry, can we international members of the Community deem US collectors as our "darksiders" [:p]

My avatar coin is a commemorative coin of the Turkish State Mint: Trojan Horse and a soldier figure depicted. Here you can find further info.

Then, as I understand it, is the 'gray' side coins. Some might think this is splitting hairs, but I'll let Terry explain this side of the collecting coin. We are awaiting your explination with bated breath.

I was given a lunar coin a couple years ago. Also I have Canadian and Brit speciman sets. So guess that makes me a darksider.

Just when I had got out with a crystal clear explanation Old Dan throws a curve! Well Old Dan, the way I understand it, our friends to the north constitute "GraySide" collecting. Bordering the U.S. and a long time friend Canada has drawn U.S. collectors for years but many of them did not consider Canada a foreign coin? Too close to be foreign but just for enough away to be different so the term GraySide would apply. Laying all jokes aside, in past years, finding a Graysider or Darksider who was willing to come out of the closet was hard to do as, well, for the most part it didn't fit the mold of a dedicated U.S. collector? You kind of had to get off in a corner somewhere to let that type of information out as it seemed NO ONE collected, heaven forbid, foreign coins. Slowly more and more folks, at least around here, admitted to a fascination with Canadian coins and then the internet comes along and blows the doors off of the closet!!! Each and every one of us must find a comfortable "niche" and opening the door to everything ever minted seemed to work for me! And, with the invent of the term Darkside I can now finally toss out the word FOREIGN! I really don't like the word and from what I have read in the last few years from our friends around the world, they don't much care for the word either. Now if we could just come up with a cool word for extraterrestial we could finally come out of the closet with those interplanetary coins!!! Who knows, maybe someday?

Thank you Terry, it sounds perfectly clear to me. In another ten or twenty years I may try some of that gray and dark stuff. Who knows what the future may bring.
