What do you imagine would cause this type of damage? Coin weighs 3.0 grams, confirming it's a copper.

@quin, I can imagine a bunch of things, but in the end it is pretty hard to say. The pitting might be from extended environmental or concentrated chemical exposure. @e&v's comment about road rash is also good.

looks like an acid dipped coin.

This one looks more like it was in acid soil for a time. Why not an acid dip? Note the rims. The whole coin looks affected the same. On a liquid dip, the acid attacks three sides of the coin. Top, bottom and edge. Thus the edges thin quicker on the edges. This one looks like a slower acid attack. More of a copper melt coin now.
