Hi we are new to coin collecting. My boyfriend has this nickel his dad gave him. We would like to know what the error is and possibly more.

This nickel is from WWII era and partly made of silver (they needed the nickel metal for war effort). So even in this awful condition it has a small value from that (about $1).

I can't think this is mint damage or error. It looks like abuse.

The coin didn't look like this when it left the mint. It may be glue on the reverse.

to CCF. On the reverse, I'm thing JB Weld. PMD only value is as stated above. Best of luck on future finds

Edited: I don't know if Acetone would soften it up or not, but it can't hurt to try

There could be a 35% silver coin under the chewing gum.
