Your mint mark has just taken a hit while in circulation. Don't know the reasoning why you have photos of a 46S in the same post? The mint used several styles over the years. to CCF

Yes, but there are only two for the 1974 S. Thin date(double punched mint mark 009 variety vista) and thick date(tall mint mark 008 variety vista). My coin is the thin date the rarest of the two. What you see is not damage it is a different design mint mark punched on top of the double punch. Before 1990 the mints were hand punching mint marks. Errors were more likely to occur. I don't know what damage you see to the mint mark but, it's not. I used 1946 S ball serif because it appears closest to that mark. Hand punched mint marks makes it possible.

Yes, thin date mms009=004 but it also has a strike on top of the 009=004. That's the mark I'm referring to. I believe it is mms 006 the ball serif.

You do realize there is a large and small date in 1974? That one is a small date. Damage on the mintmark. Not sure why the other images are there?

Variety vista lists it as thin and thick date. Thin date being the rarer one. My coin is a thin date as I said. Do you guys only see one damaged 009 mint mark? I have the coin in hand and there is a punch on top of the 009 maybe thats why it appears damaged to you guys. It being a mms 009=004 is enough for me to keep it. Thanks guys!

I will have it examined by someone who can look at it in hand. Damage is set in your mind and there is no changing that. Maybe it's the pics. Thanks!
