It's very hard to get a picture of it, but it looks like an upside-down U instead of an N in "In God We Trust" on the Obverse side. Is it just us? Also, we're aware it may be PMD, but want input on how this sort of thing would have happened and how to watch out for it!

Good question @kk and I can definitely see what you are talking about. In this case, the coin was struck normally, but at some point a well-placed hit moved around some of the metal on the letter N to give it this odd shape.

Thank you for a quick response!

Does that mean that the strike was during circulation? Or was it a strike that could have happened during mint? We're noobs, but this penny looks very interesting so we're curious in case we find another. So do you think this is PMD, or is it possibly something of more value?

to CCF! I hope you enjoy your time here!

with Spence, it's just circulation damage and not an error.

You can see how the metal is moved towards the rim at the 10 o'clock position. It has small lines leading to the top of the N. It happened a long time ago and you can tell this because the coin is toned evenly in the damaged area. I can't tell for sure, but it looks as if the rim and maybe even the edge are pushed out very slightly from the same damage.

Yes, it's just PSD and has no added value.

The mark is incuse. So it is 99% chance of being damaged in circulation. The 1% chance would be a struck through error to create an incuse mark on the coin. But that is not happening on your coin.
