Hello I would like to first indroduce my self. I am a coin collector of US coins and live in kansas. I hope to compleate my collections of coins then prehaps start selling coins as well. The first question that I have is about the lincon cent 1982. What is the diff between 1982 cop. Lg. St. and 1982 Zn. Sm. Dt. and how do I tell the differnce between them? I have been searching for this answer for many years yet have remained confused about it. if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great thanks.

Here's a good writeup on the differences for the 1982 Lincoln Cent.
Copper and zinc cents can be determined by a good scale. I've found the copper cent weighs 3.05-3.14 grams and the zinc version weight 2.45-2.55 grams.

Here is a reference I use frequently. But sometimes I have to post a pic to get a general consensus of opinion. Welcome to the forum! nlp

It's been discussed many times on this forum somewhere.
OOOPPPS. Forgot. WELCOME TO THE FORUM.
Also, lots of information on https://www.coppercoins.com Nice thing about that web site it is dedicated primarily to Lincoln Cents and someone there will answer any questions you may have on those.
For telling the difference in weights, I always suggest the popsicle stick method. Place and balance such a stick on a 6 sided pencil on a flat service. One drop of glue will hold it in place. This is a simple balance beam scale. Place a post 82 cent at the far end of one side of the stick. Now any cent placed at the opposite side will either make the stick drop if Copper or balance if Copper plated Zinc.
Also, usable to see if you have the same amount of butter on each slice of bread.

That's a good idea, just_carl. I'll try that one, I have plenty of 1982s I haven't gotten around to sorting yet.

The easiest way I've found to tell copper from zinc is to flip it. If it rings, it's copper, if it's totally flat (no sound at all while it's in the air) then it's zinc. Try flipping a pre-82 and a post 82, like an 81 and an 83 for example. Works every time.

The zinc coating is usually pretty bad on the 82's. With little practice, you can tell the difference 95% of the time just by looking at them.

You can buy these on ebay pretty cheap. Just be aware the quality seems to vary greatly. I bought a few and then cherry picked the best ones out for my collection.

An even better buy is the complete 1959-2008 BU set for about $25. The good ones on ebay have the complete 82 set of 7 coins included. It makes it very easy to complete a decent Memorial set.

I have to add you will find is very challenging to upgrade your Memorial set should you collect these seriously. Most of the BU coins will be from MS-60 to MS-66ish. Finding quality upgrades is a very fun challenge and much more difficult than one would think. Yea, the mintages were very high, but the dies were worn and most are of poor quality. Good luck in your Lincoln quest!
