Hello,

I just purchased a mini easel and a Proof Coin Box for $8 at an online store. The shipping was $6.50. I'm not too upset because I need these things but my question is are these type of shipping costs typical?

Thanks,
Rich

I can tell you from someone who sells and ships quite often. These are normal s/h fees. You have to take into account the materials ie: tape, box, packing material, packing slips, postage, travel time (gas if he is like me). You paid a normal amount for what you ordered IMO.

Most on-line stores have a minimum shipping fee, so a wise move is to wait until you have an order large enough to warrant the cost of shipping. When you consider sales tax and gas prices, shipping fees get quite reasonable!

A tremendous number of people and businesses also automatically ship by priority mail which starts out at a minimum of about $5. and they probably tack on insurance as well which is another $1.10 or something like that. So you are at a minimum of about $6.10 So a $6.50 shipping fee is not out of line. It could be done cheaper but since the USPS gives out the free Priority boxes most people just take the easy way out.

As someone who is in the "boonies", I rely a lot on online purchases. Shopping for good shipping rates is easily as important as shopping for a good price.
Good advice above - build up an order if you can and don't need the stuff right away - you'll save. Buy in larger quantities if you know you'll use the stuff eventually. If you have the option of buying locally, reconsider the local price after you calculate shipping and handling. Things like supplies are costly to ship - either do big orders or plan to buy at the next coin show, etc.
