I don't think so. The obverse field gouges would prohibit it, in my opinion. Very pretty coin, though. You may eke out a 62 if the grader is in the mood.

I very much doubt it would ever see a 63. Cheek is just too chewed, plus the other hits.

What TPG graded it?
Looks like it was done a while ago.
Not a "finger" slab.
If that's the case it might make an upgrade.

ANACS, as a rule, grades more conservatively that PCGS and NGC. This is one of the reasons that I have preferred them in the past. In my experience, they do not market-grade. The 63 example you found appears overgraded to me.

I enhanced the obverse photo by reducing lighting, increasing color contrast, and sharpening the image. The glare hid quite a few significant contact marks. Here is the enhanced photo:

If-Resubmitted-Can-This-MS-61-MS-63+?-1899-S-Morgan

The gouge above the eye, gouges in the field to the left of the nose, scratch on the neck, scratches on the cheek and behind the eye, and in the field to the right of the cap are significant. Possibly of greater concern is likely disruption of the luster on the cheek, behind the eye, on the cap, on the second cotton blossom, ear lobe, and small bear claw. The reverse is better, but not enough to pull the grade higher. IMHO, MS-61 is the top for the coin, and there is a possibility that a grader could see the disrupted luster as evidence of slight circulation and drop-grade the coin to AU-58. I don't think the contact marks would detail the coin.

Bottom line: leave it in the ANACS slab. The downside risk of regrading is greater than the upside potential. JMHO.

I certainly think it would make 62. Outside shot at 63, but not a layup.

I appreciate the help, but it went back. I paid 62+ or 63 price (at a good deal) and overpaid for a 61 and the grades are all over from 58 to 62-3 so I will look for a good one at 61 for around $350 or a 62+ for $450 it may be hard, but patience. It was a nice coin just not worth $450
