An obvious counterfeit as the date and lettering are all wrong.

I contacted the seller and invited him here. But yes, I concur that it is a counterfeit. Lettering and numbers aren't even, and the stars don't seem quite right....

I bet this is an old counterfeit though... I think it would be cool to collect as an old counterfeit piece.

Date gives it up immediately. Agree with Captain Jack, if it's an original old counterfeit item, it would be good to have in a collection.

My only question would be, why fake a common date? Unless it's not even silver. Or maybe it was done for practice. The date sure sticks out like a sore thumb.

I hope no one could be fooled by that terrible fake attempt.

It's so fake that it's funny. I wonder what the point of the gold plating was. The lettering looks like it was engraved by a second grader. AMERICA is outrageously bad.
Swamperbob has some Mexico pieces that have mysterious spellings, but this one is pretty good.

Again, I think it's an old counterfeit, probably some sort of cheap metal silver plated originally? 50 cents in 1878 was probably worth $10-15 in todays money I bet....

Seller responded to me: Yes, thank you for your email. We have already TAKEN THE LISTING DOWN. We failed to show the coin to our in house dealer before putting it on line. It is never our intent to sell counterfeit coins or currency; this one just got by us. My husband new immediately when I showed it to him after another eBayer contacted us. We recent purchased a dealer's inventory and there were plenty of bad coins and currency in it but this one got by us. Thank you again for your "HEADS UP".

I think this one is most likely a contemporary counterfeit. It's hard to believe, but there are people who collect them.

I agree that it's a contemporary counterfeit. It is collectible and I would love to see an XRF done on it to analyze the composition of the alloy; i'd bet on brass with a silver wash that has mostly been rubbed off.

A bad counterfeit. Made to look old, but a bad job at it.

Nice to see that they were at least honest in the response. Which leads me to believe they would also on the sale should it happen. In my book, unless you work for a third party grader, no one is perfect at distinguishing a fake from real. Fine people to me.
