Several years ago I bought an entire coin collection and I am still working through cataloging everything. I knew I had a Seated Liberty dime hiding in the back of one of the folders, but I had never taken it out. I finally got around cataloging that specific coin today and was very surprised when I saw the reverse. The "One Dime" and Oak Leaves are missing completely and it looks like some kind of custom hand tooling instead. Is this a love token, perhaps? Or is a counterfeit? The weight appears correct at 2.5G. Any input is appreciated!

Yes almost certainly a love token made from a real '83 dime. If you rotate the second pic by 180 degrees, it looks like the three letters in the monogram are C N I.

Spence, you are right. In fact when I flip it 180 degrees it actually looks like GNI. Here is the image rotated. Thanks for pointing that out.

There is a specialty market for love tokens. I have no idea of what they sell for, but it's a keeper. Or maybe a seller...

Thanks for the information, all. I don't collect love tokens myself. Is ebay the best place to liquidate this?

anywhere from $1 to 40 bucks roughly. There's a bunch on ebay with $20 starting bid with no bidders. The market will dictate the price. It usually has to be something really special or even better if you can attribute the love token to someone.....Love Token Society on FaceBook perhaps. There may be some interests on Facebook coin groups. I was going to say it's upside down but Spence caught it.

Yes it is a love token and that "I" is probably a "J", notice how it is not symmetrical at the bottom.
