$90. There are several varieties of the 1866/1866 Shield nickel RPD. Seller says it us FS-301 but do not know enough to confirm. Thoughts on this and grade? Thanks!

Looks like it is FS-301 because the RPD date is high and to the right unlike the other known varieties.

I think this may be a weakly struck XF coin. Note the obverse leaves have full spines. The calatrava cross above the shield has most of the secondary interior outline. VF coins do not have that level of detail. Center of shield looks flat but shield outline looks detailed and sharp. Reverse shows stars that are all fully split and not worn flat.

Typical strike. VF-30. Eye Appeal 6/10 for grade.

The reverse took most of the metal from the obverse, but circulation is consistent with medium/high VF.

By the way NS, since I'm usually hard on you since you are a long ways from being a novice, let me say that I REALLY liked this selection.

I've always said that both the Shield and Liberty nickels just seem to be forgotten so often, even though many of them are very tough to get in better grades.

NOW - really impress me and find a Shield nickel - ANY Shield nickel, without a die crack
