I buy the occasional world coin if the appeal seems exceptional. This coin showed up in a dealer's case at our Fresno coin show. The reflectivity in the fields and the original rainbow toning really stood out to my eye. I learned that Heritage has sold several of these in the last few years so apparently it's not particularly rare. How do you this this one should grade, and what do you think of it?

Thanks for your input!

A very beautiful looking coin! On UK grading I think it would be GEF - some level of MS on Sheldon, but I don't know that. It does have a weak strike on the reverse, which leaves some of the details on the symbols, particularly the lions, a bit shallow, but that is not unusual for the time.
1700 shillings are substantially scarcer than 1696 and 1697 shillings, so a good year to get. I am a little surprised at the inference that Heritage is turning lots in similar grades to this - that would sound alarm bells to me.

Hi PaddyB, thanks for the comment.
The Heritage auction archives shows at least 15 mint state examples of this year sold at various auctions during the last 5 years. These were certified by PCGS or NGC, at grades from MS-62 to MS-66. The holders mostly look to be of recent origin. Maybe a hoard of uncirculated shillings was unearthed a few years back and they have since entered the market.

Beautiful coin, guessing low MS.

Coin was graded MS-63* by NGC. Seems fair to me, with the star indicating exceptional eye appeal.
