Hi - I recently bought a set of German medals. I hoped they were silver but see no markings on them now that I have them in hand.

The 6-medal set is marked "DIE GESCHICHTE des Bayerischen Wappens" which means "THE HISTORY of the Bavarian coat of arms".

Anyone ever seen these before? I like the toning and the designs and would like more info on them. Google turned up nothing on this set.

(I'll post better pics tonight!)

Maybe issued on behalf of Hypo-Bank? I don't find any complete sets, but there are some medals out there which might be matches for individual pieces in the set. Maybe you can post good overalls of each one to this thread? Also, I agree with @spruett that even if you can't translate the accompanying documentation, please post a pic of it so that we can search for clues.

Wow. I added the keyword "Hypo-Bank" to my search and immediately found a blog that mentions the medals!

(I also found a couple of the medals for sale on ebay, but they're not my listings so I won't link them here.)

BTW: The insert is in German. It seems to describe the history of the coat of arms, not the medals themselves.

I'll post better photos tonight.

Thanks for looking and thanks for the info!

Here are the photos. I bought these for the patina / toning. I hoped they were silver but love them anyway. Let me know what you think.

The obverse - "Patrona Bavariae" - is common to all of the medals.

The rims are plain - no markings. The reverses each feature a coat of arms and a year or period.

The medals are each 25mm x 4mm. I don't have a scale to weigh them, but they're hefty.

Okay, so these were minted by the Bavarian Central Mint for an independent bank (Hypo-Bank). They depict the transformations of the coat of arms of Bavaria, or Bayern. You can match them here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_...?wprov=sfla1

They certainly have some toning going on, so I suspect they are at least silver-plated. Given that they must have been minted at least in late 1930s Germany, I highly doubt they are silver beyond looks.

It's a great looking set, though, and full of history.

@spruett001

Thanks for the info.

One thing though, I don't think these medals are from the 30s.

The box is newer - it's glossy cardboard and my guess is the set was made in the 90s?

The artist (Paul Ernst Rattelmüller) lived from 1922 - 2004 according to a German website.

My search continues...
