Well, I received my copy of KOINON today and made a beeline for Dave and Marina's article. Not surprisingly it is fine work, presenting a classification system for letterforms appearing on medieval coinage. I hope Dave doesn't mind my trying to give our community members a sense of the depth of work involved: 7,085 coins examined, narrowed down to 2,164 that contained the letter "A" (the sampling Marina and Dave were seeking), followed by careful examination of 3,758 individual examples of that letter - all resulting in nine basic types and 48 subtypes. Add to that the written essay, as well as the photographic documentation and creation of charts that accompany the essay. Geez. What a labor of love. Great scholarship and empirical investigation. And what excellent results.

Well done, Marina and Dave!

Thx Bob for the kind words. It did take a little bit of time to sift through all those pictures, but it was nice to be able to compare letterforms on my small collection to the larger body of work represented by those numismatic books.

Well, this old thread needs updating because, wouldn't you know it? He's doing it again. I see that another article of Spence's has been published.

Dave's latest article is entitled "Numismatic Typeforms of the Numeral Zero through Ten in Medieval Europe: A Classification System". It appears in the newly published KOINON: The International Journal of Classical Numismatic Studies, Volume IV (Archaeopress Publishing). This time around Spence isn't hanging on daughter Marina's coattails. He authored alone.

My copy is en route. Looking forward to reading the article. Congrats yet again, Dave.

Hey thx Bob! I'm pretty excited to have this one finally in print as I barely missed the deadline for KOINON III. And yes, Marina seems to have moved on to more pragmatic questions than medieval letterforms. These things can be easier with co-authors to split the load as you know...

Congratulations! Though currently not an area of focus for me in my numismatic journey, it sounds like an interesting read. I may need to pick up a copy to add to my library.
