Hey everybody! It's a pleasure to be here, no longer lurking but actually posting! Your forums have already been a huge help to me in the past, but now, as I get more seriously into coin collecting, I find I need more active input. I figured I would jump right into the deep end and start off with this 1807 Mexico Minted 8 reales I just bought off ebay. Diameter based on one measurement: 40mm Weight: 26.7g Most of the lettering seems to look good, as does the smile. Not magnetic. I am unsure about the edge. I can see what looks to be part of the appropriate design. However, more than half of the edge appears to be damaged/worn away. As a result - or perhaps for a lack of experience - or perhaps because it is fake - I can't identify the characteristic overlap in the design. The question is, is this a fatal defect? Are there other things that either militate toward counterfeit or genuine? And, if it is genuine, what do you think the grade is? I know the chop marks can be contentious in this regard - personally I think they're awesome, but I imagine if I got it graded it would come back details as a result. Thank you all very much for your input! I'm excited to be here!

I'm not an expert, but that looks like a legit coin to me.

Looks OK to me. You are just seeing quite a bit of wear on the edges. These coins were heavily used in commerce.

Glad to see a consensus forming re:genuineness!
It's hard to get a sense of how to grade these coins by looking online. I was thinking it was in the vf to xf range details chopmarked based on the face and torso details and based on some certified graded examples I saw.
Paid $50 for it shipped, which one way or another seems fair. Thoughts?

I see nothing that constitutes a "red flag" for me.

It looks legitimate to me. I see the obverse in the Fine category; albeit the reverse looks VF

As luck would have it, there is currently a 2-coin Charles IV lot for sale at auction, with one coin an NGC VF details chopmarked, and the other an NGC F details chopmarked. Maybe this is what you had referred to, but I'll post it here so others can see and compare for themselves. https://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotv...f02e6ce8d771In my opinion, yours would grade closer to the VF, and has better eye appeal than either. Nice score! There is also an XF details Charles IV for comparison. In my opinion your rev is comparable, but the obv is more worn. https://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotv...551403d4bcbb
