This Shield nickel has a doubled 6 and a tripled 8, as well as the reverse of 68 (FS-902) with hub breaks on 'C' and 'S' in CENTS. I purchased this a few years ago as a normal AU-50 coin, but I cannot identify its specific variety, does anyone recognize it?

Finn70, That is a fantastic repunched date! I'm a Shield nickel variety collector, and I haven't seen this one before.

Howard at the below site has an extensive database on Shield nickels, and he may be able to tell you more. He has documented many unlisted varieties.

Outstanding example. Especially odd as it had to be a replaced obverse die. I don't see a single die crack, other than at the bottom of the reverse.

Shields are so much fun because they are the kings of the die cracks. I've never seen that obverse.

@ moxking: There is a fine die crack that runs from 'R' in 'TRUST' to the top right tip of the cross, as well as the bottom cluster leaf tip (viewer's left) to the left arrow fletch. Year for year there are more varieties in the Shield nickel series than in any other, partially due to the very hard alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel (The mint had only just introduced this alloy in 1865 with the nickel 3 cent piece). This led to a plethora of varieties, which makes this series fun to collect from. (Morgan's are still my favorite varieties series). Thanks for your input. Might have to send this one off to Mr. Spindel for cataloging. Thanks goes out to ClassicCoins as well for all your help.

What a wild RPD! Very nice find, I too can't recall any I've seen like it. Looks to be at least a quad punched date, maybe even quint-punched.
