I agree, it might have been plated after leaving the mint.

Ty for the input! I kinda put it aside because it also had a copper tone to it and I'm new to this >.< getting new batteries today because my scale keeps giving me different weight i.e. 2.98, 3.02, 3.05 etc.
Most likely you guys are right because I have another similar toned, which I might post a picture of in this post vs. a new one, ty guys!:)

Ps. Why was it most likely plated? For fun by the collector? Or were they officially sold plated at one point?

Possible mercury dip, so don't play with it.

Woah...thank you for telling me, I'm careful when I handle these ( but I'm using precautions to keep the coins clean and safe, not protect for me!) I didnt know that was possible! Do the mercury dipped coins look like this? Does anyone have photos of mercury dipped coins? That is very scary! Ty for saying this!

Any information on murcury dipped coins...or if this one appears to be dipped in murcury, is more than appreciated, because now I am frightened.

Someone must know about mercury dipped coins and the the potential dangers in being around them, or have pictures of what they would look like toned?

@dp88, the use of mercury to color copper cents has been discussed many times here on CCF. If you use the keywords MERCURY and CENT in the search box, you can find them. Here is a link to one example of an early discussion: http://goccf.com/t/96160

Years ago in order to keep BU coins from turning colors, they used to coat the coins with varnish or lacquer. They realized later that was not a good idea at all. What you do today, may affect the future of that coin.
