This coon was found in a burned homesite from 1850-1960. Very bad condition but I believe it is gold. Location Kentucky - but my great uncle served in WW2 Europe and Africa.

Why do you think it is gold? It does not look like it. Even burned gold should not have any coating on it.

I don't know if it is gold. The soil is highly mineralized in this area. It could be brass / bronze or gold plated or contaminated where other metal burned near it.

It would be easy to verify if it is gold. Even a scratch test can hardly make this item worse. That being said, it is so badly damaged I cannot seen any trace of a design, except for the beading around the edge. So if it is gold it is only worth the metal value. If not gold, it could just as easily be a token, and in that condition it is just a lump of metal. Possibly a soak in acetone would reveal some design features.
