tdziemia Pillar of the Community United States 7962 Posts	Posted 11/05/2019 5:55 pm Two recent auction pick ups for my Kingdom of Poland OFEY collection. Sigismund III Trojak (3 groschen) 1603, Krakow mint. KM#6, Iger K.03.1.a Augustus III Copper 1 groschen (3 schilling) 1752 Grunthal mint, KM#147.1, Gumowski 2135, Kopicki 2081. The reign of Augustus III (1733-63), who was concurrently Elector of Saxony as Friedrich Augustus II, poses a dilemma for collectors of Polish coins. From 1750-1763 there are coins struck in both Saxony and Polish mints, with the king's Polish title (Augustus III, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania). However, before this one can only find coins minted in Saxony, but with his German name and titles (Friedrich Augustus, King of Poland ... Elector of the Holy Roman Emperor), and typically German denominations ("12 einen Thaler," "24 Einen Thaler" etc). Gumowski calls these issues Saxon-Polish, but they appear to be most often listed under Saxony (Krause, Numista). Deciding NOT co collect these as part of a Poland OFEY means there is a gap from 1733-1749 for this reign, but also a gap for most years between 1706 and 1733 in his father's reign (Augustus II) where a similar situation exists. Sometimes it feels like multiple authorities have divergent opinions on what exactly to call some of these countries. I think that coin was actually a bit undergraded by the auction firm, and that (while NOT cheap), I got it at a better price than I expected. @spence, Indeed! As we've moved back through the "How Far Back, we've seen questions on Saxony-Poland, Poland-Livonia, Prussia-Poland, Poland-Lithuania, Poland-Silesia I've concluded that I just have to make a decision on what will be in/out of my collection based on my own criteria, then stick with it ... until I don't Report this Post to the Staff
