Sandy Campbell shared a note informing everyone that Bob Armstrong passed away yesterday. He was 84. Bob was a gentleman's dealer, always fair, and a conservative grader with a knack for finding coins with great eye appeal. His handwriting and style on 2x2 flips was so well known, and respected, that dealers would often leave the coins in Bob's holders, when reselling them.
I had only met Bob once, but he left a great impression... I did quite a bit of business with Bob over the years. He was a terrific gentleman. Sad news indeed.
I was once standing at Bob's table and asked to look at a large cent. Chuck Moore was standing next to me at the time. I asked Bob what he wanted for the coin, even though the price was marked. Before he could answer, Chuck said; "Bob, watch out, you know he studies varieties." It was Chuck's way of pulling my chain. Bob's response was; "I am already making fair money, if he knows something, so what?" Pretty typical Bob Armstrong. I will miss him.

One other anecdote. I very well remember Bob sitting (always) in the front row of auctions. He would bid by doffing his pen. If you weren't paying attention to Bob's pen, you could easily think the auctioneer was running up the price on you.

I've been around long enough to see quite a few dealers pass from the scene and Bob was definitely one of the best.

Well, we now know that Canadian Coin News writers visit CCF, sometimes to mine information (but not cite their sources). I knew this sounded familiar, when I read it...

Bob had all the great attributes of a top-notch coin dealer and a fantastic person rolled into one.
As a dealer, he was always fair, knowledgeable and treated you with respect.
As a person, he was always cheerful, kind and just a great person to talk to.
The rest of your day was always so much better after talking to both Bob and his lovely wife Joyce, even if you didn't buy any bargains from him that day.
R.I.P. Bob
