This VC (Victoria Cross) coin issued in 2000 is much sought after by Aussie decimal dollar collectors. It commemorates 100 years of our first receipent of the VC, the highest military decoration for bravery and valour in the field of combat under the British system. I think it is the equivalent to your Congressional Medal of Honour.Dealers are now asking for more than AUD$200 for this Aussie coin. I have always had a weakness for coins with a military theme and was wondering if there are any "liteside" coins minted that recognises/commemorates receipents of the CMH

My searches came up empty. Although commemorative coins and, medals have beed minted honoring military hero's and, medal award winners. You can check out the U.S. mint for coins or medals they made in the past.

Unlike the CMH the VC and other (Commonwealth)medals are very rarely awarded in comparison to US largese for awards.
The Commonwealth vetran will have 2 or 3 ribbons/awards, the US awards medals for passing a course and even a person who has never seen action has a chest full of ribbons.
The VC has a longer life and amazing history. All VC are made from a single russian cannon captured in the Crimean War. There is enough left for 80 odd medals to be struck.
All VC winners and the medals are known, listed and honoured througout the Commonwealth. They must be honoured with more respect shown by the Military to a recipient than to a visiting head of state. VC winners and monarchs are the only people that the "colours" are lowered in a mark of respect for. It goes on. I was posted to an Australian Unit that was awarded the CMH (the whole unit got it) and within our traditions it meant little.(a ribbon on the wrong side)

Canada has just released a commemorative to the Victoria Cross. Let me see what I can find out and get back with you on this one! Don't know whether it is just proof or if they also issued an unc. Will let you know along with the current prices and will see if they have hit ebay yet!

2006 is the 150 yr Anniversary of the VC so expect a lot of different ones this year from most Commonwealth countries.

Got the info for you. Look for my PM!
Haved purchased both the Canadian silver and the gold plated silver VC coins at very very good prices! (below mint prices) And I avoided buying the whole set of proof coins.

It is very entertaining to build a set from a specific theme! I have started a collection of Knights on horseback (wonder why) as they have been around, in various countries, for years and years! Will have to see what I come up with as the potential for coins from at least 4 centuries is out there!

That's a hard one Terry....there are a lot of gold sovereigns and half sovereigns with St George sitting on a horse slaying a dragon on the reverse side.....lol....[:p]

Yes, but there is also a lot of cheap silver with knights on them as well! Just received a modern proof (Gibraltar 1992) that is crown size and very attractive! So impressed I have purchased a 1994 that quite frankly was way under priced, based on Krause, so it is on the way as well! Lithuania uses the knight on horseback on its modern coins so they will probably be my early 1900's pick. Its the 1800's, 1700's and 1600's that will be a tad bit tougher so I will be patient and selective! Going to be fun!
