I received a nice surprise in the mail today from CNG. I didn't think that I won anything in their last mail bid sale. However this teston arrived today - before I had even paid the invoice! It is a 1535 teston of Antoine le Bon (the Good) who was Duke of Lorrine from 1508-1544. So here he is with some of my other early coins from Lorraine.

Holy smokes, those are excellent. I take it this is a special collection of yours? What made you interested in the Duke of Lorraine?

Thanks everyone!
I started collecting early hammered French and English coins and worked my way back into the French Feudal coinage.
These early testons are some of the first modern style coins which began to appear at the beginning of the Renaissance. Medieval silver coins in Europe prior to these testons (first struck in Italian and French Feudal states) did not have realistic portraits of rulers, only legends and symbols. Placing a realistic portrait of a ruler on the obverse marked a change in style which rapidly spread and still continues to this day.

Wow - fascinating set! I love to see threads like this. The presentation of all the pieces together is also very well done. What type of material is holding the airtite holders?

These are panels from the Air-tite albums I bought from Brent-Krueger.

After many momths of research I believe my coin is a 1693 15 Deniers Colonial French Ameriques that was found on the shores of Cape Breton by my ancestors. I am looking for more information and was wondering if someone out there might be able to help me. Thanks

You should start a new thread with your question, that way everyone will see it.
