I have a "sealed proof set" from 1964. Should I open it to see if it has the accented hair variety? Or does it have some value based on the mystery of what's inside. I have heard they were not sealed by the mint. I bought mine from an estate and it was sealed when I bought it.
Is there much of a difference in value between the accented hair or the regular 1964 Kennedy?
Thanks for your input.

The "sealed sets" are just a gimmick. The vast majority of them were never sealed by the Mint and they have either been sealed by previous owners trying to extract perceived "extra value" from an unknown or they just sealed by themselves with humidity moistening the glue. Some of the "sealed sets" are not even original envelopes and may not even contain a 1964 proof. There is definitely a premium for the Accented Hair variety and cameos are always nice as well so I say open it up

That's what I wanted to hear. I would guess this one was sealed by humidity. Looking forward to seeing what is inside. Ken

This one came from a coworker, who was selling a family members collection that had passed away. I bought some proof and uncirculated sets from her. All envelopes were open except this one. It has 6.50 written on the outside, so I don't think they bought it from the "coin Vault"

All I was saying is you don't know until you have them graded.

Sealed brown envelope proof sets are a dime a dozen, and you can guarantee someone has seen inside most of them. You see, there's this company out there somewhere that took a huge stack of similar envelopes to those the mint used, had the little words printed on the envelopes, then resealed proof sets and began selling them as mint sealed. They made a fortune doing it, and completely destroyed anyone's hope of receiving a truly unsearched proof set in a brown envelope.
I open all of them...no telling whether it's really unsearched until you open it and find a goodie!

Well I popped it open yesterday.
No Accented hair from what I can tell. It also was sandwiched between to pieces of thin cardboard and a light pinkish orange letter from the mint. It had a very gruff message. In short explaining that any imperfections you may see are more than likely on the cellophane, for the collector not to waste the mints time or their own corresponding about it.

Interesting note from the mint. Something to ponder.

I thought it was interesting myself for some reason. I will try to post a scan of it sometime this week, just in case anyone wants to see it.

Quote: Interesting note from the mint. Something to ponder. Back then the mint did not accept returns. You had to pay for you order up front (cash or check, no credit cards) the money was deposited immediately and the order could not be canceled even though you might not receive it for ten months or more, and it was not returnable. The only way you might get your money back would be if they had a sell out and couldn't fill your order. You might not learn that for a year and then you would get a notice that you would a refund in a few weeks. And people complain about how the mint treats them today.

My Favorite Line Quote: If there should appear-what may seem to you-a defect or scratch on a coin-it is, no doubt, a crease in the packaging material.
