So I just realized that I have a rather nice hoard (about $80) of EF-AU Ike dollars (though none of these are 1973s), and it just seems to me that they probably will not increase in value any time soon. So if you were in my situation would you rather keep this hoard or spend them on a Thaler or other equally nice coin?

I know Zohar444 is our Thaler guy, and I agree with him. Ikes in my opinion are common coins not really worth the long term hold.

But are they worth no more than face if they are EF-AU? It does seem that people tend to hoard them no matter the grade.

Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe folks don't see them too often or the like big coins. From my perspective, and again, just my opinion, I don't see holding them unless they are the 40%ers or very high certified grades ie.67-69 by a reputable TPG. Numismedia price guide will tell you what you need to know.

Thaler all the way. Everyone has a couple of Ikes hanging around the house. I don't consider them worth much over face value if they aren't BU.

So do you guys think that I should also dump my 1999 SBA dollars and CU consecutive 1995 $2 bills in order to just get one really nice coin?

I would. I am slowly offloading the 20th century materials to focus on earlier coinage. Specifically the SBA, IKE and hoards of Presidential dollars are less exciting in my view than older designs. Zohar

You know me, I am going be that solitary voice defending the Eisenhower dollars! If you do not care for the Eisenhower dollars and want a Thaler (or some other coin), then try to make a trade before you spend them. Maybe the coin shop that has the coin you want will give you a decent premium for them just to sweeten the deal. You never know until you ask!

In all honesty, I don't think that i'll get over face from the particular shop where I may spend them. This is due to the fact that I have received them as change from them over the past few years. In fact, my change was $3 a few days ago and I was handed 3 Ikes. This shop is one of the main entrepos for coins in this part, so they see a lot of stuff and have an understanding of their relative scarcity. So I won't be losing money if I spend them there. It just seems to me that a lot of recent US coins are so overinflated in their value anyways, so they otherwise would probably circulate (If it weren't for the inconvenience of spending huge coins).
