What causes the weight to different is probably the rolled metal stock can be thicker or thinner. The rim thickness has nothing to do with it. The planchet goes in with one weight and comes out with the same weight. The metal is shaped with what comes in and going out, as the same weight. A lamination/debris can reduce/add the weight if it falls off after strike. If it goes in with a clip, it comes out with a clip. The metal is just moved around during the strike.
