Hi All, I recovered an old silver, coin yesterday. I've never seen anything quite like it but it looks to be a hammered coin with Arabic writing inscribed on it. Can anyone identify it or perhaps estimate the era or origin? Please see attached photo. It's reminds me of a 1/2 real Spanish cob! Thanks in advance! Edited by perdidogringo 11/16/2019 08:44 am

It is indeed Arabic/Islamic, and though I can't identify the exact date or issuer, the distinctive seriffed script dates from roughly the same time as the Crusades (AD 1100-1300).

Thank you for the feedback, Sap. Would this have been a common coin back in the day?

Bumping this thread to hopefully get a more accurate identification and date. On various sites (including earlier in this thread), I've gotten several opinions including:
1. "It is indeed Arabic/Islamic, and though I can't identify the exact date or issuer, the distinctive seriffed script dates from roughly the same time as the Crusades (AD 1100-1300)."
2. "Islamic acke. Holed is typical to see. I have several"
3. "looks post-mongol, but I can't make out a name. the left side is upside down. it has the kalima in the middle and the name of the first caliph abu bakr above it (it's typical for coins after the mongol invasion to have the names of the four rashidun caliphs around the kalima). the right side is turned 90' ccw. I can see al-sultan al-`adl, with a word below that I can't read. I too would love to know what it is."
4. "Perhaps Timur in Anatolia"
5. "I suspect it's golden horde, but I can't find a match."
If anyone can add some clarity to the origin/date of this hammered coin, I'd appreciate it!

Probably Golden Horde, khan's name incomplete.

@perdido, knowing that it is from the Golden Horde would date this to 13th or 14th Centuries. I'm not sure that you are going to get more exact timing than that.

Thank you to Kushanshah & Spence for your feedback. I guess I can confidently say it is from the Golden Hoarde! Now, I have to figure out why the coin was placed on this silver contraption (see photo). I'm not sure if the coin was made into an earring, if that's how they carried coins back in the day, or something else? Any ideas?

Perhaps and earring, although the wire seems quite thick. Is it sized more appropriately as a annular brooch?
