1935 Lincoln Wheat Cent Doubled Die - Denied Twice!

tropicalbats Pillar of the Community United States 6116 Posts	Posted 11/18/2019 10:19 pm I originally sent this coin to Dr. Wiles as it is at least as strong as any number of similar class 5 DDOs (see 1943 DDO-006 as an example). http://varietyvista.com/01a%20LC%20...3PDDO006.htm Dr. Wiles stated, "Possible DDO on BER of LIBERTY, but even if it is, the spread is much too close to be listable in the CONECA files." Okay, so I sent it to Mr. Wexler and just got it back. He says, "Unfortunately, the doubling that you see on your 1935 Lincoln Cent is not the result of a doubled die error. It is a common form of doubling known as ' Die Deterioration Doubling'." Really? Here are a couple images of the LIBERTY. I took the "liberty" (pun intended) of putting in an arrow or two where the doubling is visible including notches on the lower right of several letters. Maybe it's not strong enough for CONECA (see that 1943 above), but DDD? For me, the notching/split serif is most visible on the letter E.
