Don't know if this is doubling or not.

Looking at the letter to the NW corner, it is Machine Doubling. A little better description might help. Year/denomination/business or proof?

It's eject doubling. This is caused when the coin is stuck in the die at the time it is ejected from the press. You can easily tell that it's ejection doubling because the edge is scooped upward, as you would expect when something is popped out of a recessed area with force.

Hi,

There is major ejection doubling.

But there are also notches on the upper left parts of the letters. I'm guessing this is a 1961 or 1963 Proof. There are some doubled dies that look like this on Franklins of that year. There are others as well that are similar on 1956 and 1959 pieces as well.

I'd be interested in the date as well.

Thanks,
Bill

The notching is there, but too minor in my estimation to warrant much if any premium.

Hi,

There are characteristics that we have come to know on many die variety coins that allow us to peg a date or a narrow group of dates even when the date is not offered.

You've seen Chuck narrow down a cent to a given year based upon small details like the designer's initials or the way the lettering is on a particular die.

When you've worked with a lot of these coins, they become engrained in the brain:-)

It's usually not psychic inspiration but experience that allows us to do this.

Thanks,
Bill

PS: In 20 years you don't want to be just like me:-) LOL:-)
