Going over my Whitman cent folders , I noticed this mint-mark on a 1942S Cent- it seems to be a MMS-002 mint mark used from 1917 to 1941.

In 1941, the Mint used both the MMS-002 and MMS-004 (Trumpet Tail)but in "1942" and from 1945 to 1952 they used ONLY the MMS-004 Trumpet tail according to the Variety Vista Site (Coneca)

Attached are pictures of the coin in question, plus another normal 1942S that I have with the Trumpet Tail S and both the MMS-002 and MMS004 pics from the Vista site for comparison.

Experts- what do you think? is this the same mint mark as a MMS-002, and if so, would this be a "transitional" variety?

You have an RPM (lower serif) with Machine Doubling damage (upper area of the mintmark). The squished area at the top makes it appear smaller, but this is a normal mintmark style for the year.

Thanks to the clarification Chuck.

Even with the MD Damage, what RPM would this be?

A 1942S S/S?

I have another question regarding Machine Doubling Damage/RPM on a coin.

If you can have a coin with Machine Doubling Damage and a valid RPM in the Mint-Mark as noted on this 1942S cent, can it be possible to have a coin with MDD and also be a valid DDO or DDR?

Of course. That's part of what makes them completely different from one another.

I have examples of a doubled die obverse, class 6, from (I believe) 1940S that every one of three examples I have exhibits Machine Doubling. I consider them worthless for photography and publication because they could confuse newbies. Still looking for an example without the Machine Doubling to photograph.
