Usually I try to do enough research before buying coins, medals, medallions or tokens. But like most times, you don't know what you don't know. And when you come to know what you don't know, the pain/disbelief/sadness/disappointment is sometimes too much. I am more upset than anything as I now have to extend my wanted list.

Take this 1967 medallion from McTavish (out of New Brunswick) as an example. For over ten years, I had thought that there was only one die version, albeit I knew that there were different metals (gold and silver) and different sizes (30mm and 60mm).

However recently, I just found out that there are different die versions.

Version/Die #1 versus Version/Die #2

Help:

1. Does anyone know which die is the original from McTavish? I would assume the die with the little logo (not even sure what it is, anyone?), is the original as it is on the large 60mm that I have. And it is also on 4/5 gold versions sold via the Bell auctions over the years. However 1/5 of the gold versions sold via the Bell auction is the second die, without the little logo, and it also has writing (Lombardo? mint) under the bust/portrait/effigy. Which begs the question whether the one without the little logo is a fake/copy produced by another company. It is interesting that the writing is *not* on the silver die, which means that there are actually three die versions! :-(

*** Update - okay I just found another thread (TOPIC_ID=329948) on this website discussing this medallion - http://goccf.com/t/329948. It confirms the die with the logo is the original. ***

2. Does anyone know if both are from McTavish?
3. Does anyone know the mintages of each?

Thanks,
BK

Thanks for posting these pictures I had not seen the 60 mm medal or
the Gold ones, only the one Chequer shared. There were at least two
dies and Chequer said there were varieties. I can see by the bands in
the hair on the obverse in particular, no logo and what is the name
under the bust in the bottom photo looks like LOMBARDO. Mine is
counter struck with a .925, and some kind of Hallmark, post strike.

Thanks for the share, bckathome.
