Nice coin, Jim. 1882H DDO. I am guessing ICCS called this one about a 45, maybe a 50. Given the uneven color, tough to say whether PCGS would grade it or body bag it for "questionable color." |

I think it might be an old cleaning I agree with you Rob but very nice high grade for a hard coin to find I'm pretty happy with it. ICCS seem to look the other way or they slip through when grading some coins that's why I prefer PCGS for grading not a lot slip by their system of grading. That's a very nice find papeldog!
It's the late state of that obverse die with the heavy die crack through the C of VICTORIA plus the die crack to the R of REGINA.

Oh, my heavens .. is that an old friend from Chicagoland actually posting something after all this time? Welcome back aboard, Dan ... missed you.
For those of you who don't know, Dan in Crystal Lake has forgotten more about Vicky large cents than some of you will ever digest. He had a couple good coin sites with great research and info ... and some very informative chats. He was one of the 4-5 amigos, with me, Rob Turner, Brad Gravestone, Zonad and papeldog who put together the 2011 Charlton variety guide for Vicky large cents ... that was the first time that a cadre of collectors wrote the variety section rather than dealers. It was a great reference work and is still the most sought-after Charlton that they ever put out. It created a tremendous rush for all Canadian varieties, not just large cents.

It is a great coin. A real toughie. There is an 1882 coin like it with much more subdued repunching and just as difficult to get. But I'm still looking for my first 1881 single serif N. It should list at twice what the tough 1882 cent garners. The 2011 Charlton is gold and sought after so when is an update coming? Hopefully, it's in the works.

Papeldog, that's it! I have one here but only in a strong VF-20. I wasn't aware of the extra metal marker and I just checked the coin and you are correct! It's only the second one I've ever found. Your pictures are much better than I could take.

That is a very nice coin and a tough variety papeldog! It's one of my favorites also. In my experience that die is just as hard to find as the one with the major doubling, maybe harder.
You have a very nice collection of the 1881's and 1882's. Thanks for sharing them with us.

There are 3 different dies for the Obv 2/1 and that is what we always called type 2. It's where the denticles are doubled between Victoria and Canada. It's the 2nd in scarcity, in my opinion, of the 3 types/dies, but still easier than the type 3. The type 1 has the minor doubling and the type 3 is the heavy punch doubling. We did not include the type 2 in the 2011 Charlton variety guide, but we did the 1 & 3.

Thank you for all the kind comments on my coins but if it wasn't for Bill (okie) it wouldn't be as nice. Thanks for all your help Bill in helping me out now and than on the harder coins to find. The first coin was graded by ICCS as an EF-40 and the second coin I got raw from Bill and I sent it to PCGS and it come back as a AU-55. Here they are  |

Nice coin on the second one (AU55) also. They are scarce, but not impossible. I have one in a PCGS AU50 holder and one in an ICCS MS62TR holder (bought from a member here).

Thank you for the kudos, Jim. I just looked and, for the '82 Obv 2/1's, I still have 3 of the type 3 (heavy DP), 3 of the type 2 (denticles doubled) and 21 of the type 1 with no or minor R/P'ing. At one time, I had 6 of the type 2's and 4 of the type 3's.
