Interesting find, Dave! Call me crazy, but might this actually be a class 8+1 DD? There's what appears to me to *maybe* be a faint outline of the 3 tilted and rotated, same with the 5? Not sure about the misplaced mintmark, but I'm hopeful for you. Might be wishful thinking on my part, but I'm curious what you say as you have the coin in hand.

Dave, I've drawn some little arrows on your picture. Are these points raised? This is what I'm wondering could be a slight rotated and titled hubbing of the date.  |

Have you checked to see if this is something on the coin? It looks like, I know this sounds dumb, maybe glue. If this were an die variety it would have been found years ago. So try carefully to see if it moves with a toothpick. Very carefully.

Well from the images provided, the color on those areas doesn't look like copper.
