Just acquired this because I thought it was interesting. It may be an error but I can't think of anything that could cause this except for damage. What do you all think?

Well for sure it is damage and it occurred after the coin was struck. Was this coin part of an uncirculated set mint package?

Can't say for sure what caused it but it is definitely PMD.
No way that could happen during the striking of the coin.

Yikes that sucks. Too bad it doesn't count as an error, considering the mint did it. Thanks for the explanation coop!

I think if it was still sealed in the original cello, then it may have premium value. It's not an everyday find, in any case. I would probably keep it as an example of Mint damage.
