My father found this in a field in South Carolina. I have no clue as to what it is. Please help me identify this coin.

to the forum. Interesting piece looks like some kind of token. There appears to be a Russian eagle on the obverse and on the reverse what looks like a cross date and cyrillic writing.

Russia 5 Kopek, 1727. I can't make out the mintmark, should be M, H or K under the eagles left leg

Yep. Here's what one looks like in better condition.

How 1727 Russian 5 Kopeks found the way to South Carolina?

Especially since it predates the large copper ones and is rarely seen even here!

Were there Russian settlers in SC? I assume British money circulated in SC during that era. I'd strongly guess that Spanish money did too. French money was probably pretty common as well. Since no money was made exclusively for the area, people may have used pretty much anything they could get their hands on.

Well it's hard to say that this coin wasn't dropped in the field like 5 years ago by a silly coin collector or really a few hundred years ago. Still, pretty interesting.
