I recently acquired a Duchy of Pomerania schilling minted at the Damm mint (coin not yet in hand), and would like some help on the date, which I realize sounds strange. This, and a similar type from the Garz mint, are coins which are fairly accessible for collectors of early dated coins (@spence has a few ... this is my first). The possible date range as best I can tell is 1491-1496 or possibly 1497; only the last two digits were engraved. This type is referenced in Dannenberg, Schulten and Levinson, none of which I have. So my research has been restricted to comparing with examples sold in recent auctions, and bugging @spence for info from Levinson.

Here is the side of the coin which bears the date (between 11:00 and 12:00), followed by results of the research I have been able to do by consulting Numista, CoinArchives, WCN and medievalcoinage.com websites.
Need-Help-With-Date-Attribution:--1491?--1492?-Neither?

1. Minted at the Damm mint in the years 1491-96/97. Legible photos of every date but 1491 can be found on the internet searching on various key words. 1493, 1494 and 1496 are likely not possibilities due to the shapes of these numerals. At this time, the numeral 5 was often drawn/engraved like a 7, and the numeral 7 was often like an upside down V.
Below is an example attributed as a 1495 (WCN archive). The listing in Numista has a similar 5:
Need-Help-With-Date-Attribution:--1491?--1492?-Neither?
All examples attributed as either 1495 or 1497 have a significant horizontal part at top, which I think rules these out as possibilities, too.

2. The reverse legend on this type appears as either MONETA NOVA DAM(date) or MONETA NOVA DHAM(date). According to Levinson (again, thanks to @spence), the 1491 has the version with DAM, and all examples I could find from 1494-96 also have DAM. On the other hand, every 1492 I could find has DHAM, and 1493 is known to exist with both DAM and DHAM (medievalcoinage.com).

So, based on the reverse legend, my coin is most likely a 1492, but if I look at the numeral 2 in the examples I could find for 1492 Damm, I am having a hard time convincing myself. The 2s are always more rounded on top, and always have a pronounced horizontal base (see composite below). However, mine has been double or triple struck. Possibly some parts of the 2 are being obscured or altered due to this?
Need-Help-With-Date-Attribution:--1491?--1492?-Neither?
If anyone can find a photo of a 1491, that would be great (medievalcoinage.com has one, but the resolution is so low and the date so worn that it doesn't help).

Not the Damm mint, but rather a little ways away in Saxony. The second digit of the date on this '92 looks quite a bit like yours.

I did notice that in your recent How Far Back post. And the 2 in the Garz mint is close.

As you know, by the time I pulled the trigger on this, I was leaning towards it most likely being a 1492. Also, based on populations I can find at auction and for sale, 1492 is the most common date for this coin.

What bothers me most is that I can't find any other Damm 1492 with a 2 that is this poorly formed. AND that I can't find any coin from Damm with a 1 for comparison.
There are 1501 coins from the Stettin mint with a full date, and the 1 on these coins looks like an I, which also argues against this digit being a 1.

But again, a different mint, maybe a different engraver, and 10 years later ...

(And of course, 1491 coins are MUCH harder to come by)
