@HM, the shallow groove around both the obv and rev rims seems to be most often associated with the coin being encased, like in one of those "lucky penny" holders.

So if you have an Encased Coin that looks great. Leave it there. It is worth more in the holder, than removed. Why? Because when the coin is removed, then you just have a nice looking damaged coin. Now it is just worth face value. In the holder, you will get more money for the coin with the holder as it conceals the damaged coin.
